I’ve enjoyed every Sarah Jio book I’ve picked up, so it’s pretty much a no-brainer to say “Yes!” when offered a review copy of her latest, The Look of Love!

Born during a Christmas blizzard, Jane Williams receives a rare gift: the ability to see true love. Jane has emerged from an ailing childhood a lonely, hopeless romantic when, on her twenty-ninth birthday, a mysterious greeting card arrives, specifying that Jane must identify the six types of love before the full moon following her thirtieth birthday, or face grave consequences. When Jane falls for a science writer who doesn’t believe in love, she fears that her fate is sealed. Inspired by the classic song, The Look of Love is utterly enchanting.

drey’s thoughts:
Jio’s latest offering is a story of life, love, and a bit of the otherworldly. When Jane Williams gets a cryptic card on her twenty-ninth birthday, she almost ignores it. Curiosity wins, however, and Jane can hardly believe what she finds when she opens that door.
Learning that she has the ability to see love, gives Jane an explanation for the vision trouble she’s had all her life – one other than a tumor that’ll take her life if she doesn’t undergo surgery. And though she has a hard time in the beginning, Jane begins to believe.
Not that The Look of Love is only about Jane. Her brother Flynn is infatuated with a neighbor, but too afraid to approach her. Her best friend Lo is dating a married man, and believes it’s for keeps. Her friend Elaine is wondering if the grass is greener across the street, and has a difficult choice to make. And her friend Mary finds out she’s pregnant – just after her husband leaves her.
It’s not all fun and roses in The Look of Love, if you can’t already tell but I quite liked this quick read of intertwining stories that Jio tells with a deft hand. If there was one thing I could change, it would be to flesh out the characters a bit more – some of the switches from one character to another were a bit abrupt.
All in all, The Look of Love reads very well paired with a seasonal cup of hot chocolate – feel free to add a dollop of whipped cream or a splash of Bailey’s for a bit of extra warmth if you’re buried in snow.
