Oh, how could anyone not want to check out Carl Mørck’s next adventure? He’s my favorite cranky detective, like, ever. ;)

the marco effectdrey’s thoughts:

Adler-Olsen’s Department Q series is one of my favorite police procedurals, for its cranky lead, card stories, dry humor, and quirky secondary characters. The Marco Effect is the fifth installment in the series, and it definitely continues the tradition set by its precedents. The mystery itself is layered à la a le Carré thriller, playing on a game board of multiple continents, embezzlement, child soldiers, and a gang of petty thieves with an egomaniacal leader.

The villains would’ve gotten away with their schemes, if not for the misfortune of a teenager with a conscience. And when Carl et al get involved, it’s almost an afterthought. They’ve other things going on right now, namely Assad’s recovery from events in The Purity of Vengeance, Rose’s budding romance, and Carl’s broken heart.

Yes, this means my favorite cranky detective is crankier than ever…

The story in The Marco Effect does take a bit to set up, though it’s not a very complicated plot. It just looks that way from ground level, which is where Carl & his posse sit. The myriad characters also took a bit to get settled in their places in my brain, and I did think we could’ve done without some of the parts in the book. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Marco Effect, and I’m hoping that Carl gets a bit more good news in the next installment of this series, whenever it gets here. Tomorrow would be good. ;)

drey’s rating: Excellent!
